Easy Ways To Decorate Your First Home For Christmas

Congratulations on your nuptials! With the wedding done and dusted, it’s time to focus on the next big chapter of your life: building IKEA furniture together. Just kidding! But seriously, why does it take two people to put together a chair?

So, you’re ready to move into your new home when your family calls to say it’s your turn to host Christmas this year. PANIC. There’s so much to do! There’s gift buying, decorating, etc. Before you panic-buy Christmas decorations and risk your home looking like an elf threw up all over the place, don’t.

Instead, read on for simple ways to decorate your house for Christmas and bring on the holiday cheer!

Get A Christmas Tree

No Christmas is complete without a Christmas tree. Bringing a green tree into your home for the holidays, may it be artificial or fake, has been a long-standing tradition. It brings instant cheer; frankly, it doesn’t feel right without one!

Pick a theme colour, three max, and stick with it. Don’t go overboard with your ornaments. And get warm white Christmas lights. You’ll be surprised at how it makes your tree look full. The best place to showcase your tree would be parallel to the front door, so it welcomes your guest when they walk in.

Pine-ing For Christmas

Besides Christmas ornaments, you can even use pine cones in your tree or wreathe to bump up the Christmas feel. These cones are probably the most accessible and cheapest decorations you can find to dress your house up for the holidays. If you’re lucky, you can easily pick them off the ground if you live where they grow.

Place them in a shallow decorative bowl with a few rosemary sprigs and pine tree branches, and you have an effortless Christmas dinner centrepiece. If you have tiny humans coming for dinner, just remember to place the cones high enough so they can’t grab them.

Floral Arrangements

Speaking of effortless, adding floral arrangements to your Christmas decorations brightens your space and gives your home a natural floral scent. A popular Christmas flower has got to be the Poinsettia, known for its unmistakably vibrant red colours and petals.

Placed them in your Christmas tree, wreathe, or tucked into your dinner table arrangement with some red berries for that pop of colour. Amaryllis are also a good choice, and they last through the season. But honestly, you can choose any flowers you like. Our favourites are white and red roses or orchids to fit the Christmas vibes.

Embrace natural light

During the festive season, the days tend to be a little darker than they are during the summer months. While this can contribute to a warm and cozy aesthetic, it can also make your home feel a little gloomy. As such, you should try to embrace natural light throughout your home, creating a space that feels bright and welcoming - especially if you’ll be entertaining plenty of guests throughout the holiday season.

One way in which you can achieve this goal is by swapping out heavy curtains for something a little more lightweight. For example, you could try Venetian blinds, which will allow more natural light to enter your home when open, or create the perfect backdrop to your holiday photos when closed!

We Wreath You A Merry Christmas!

And lastly, the wreath. Christmas wreaths are another tradition with many uses besides hanging on your front door. We like using them as table centrepieces, with a candle in the centre, or hanging miniature ones on our tree. They are usually available dressed up or plain for you to decorate.

If you want one to fit your aesthetics, pop into your local craft store and pick a plain one. You can use the pine cones mentioned above, some berries and Poinsettias for that pop of colour. Spray on fake snow if you can get a hold of it for the extra Christmas feel.

There you have it! Simple ways you can decorate your new home for the holidays. We understand that settling into a new home can get overwhelming, so don’t stress about your holiday decorations. Another easy deco that you can drape over the mantel or door frame is Christmas garlands. They also come dressed up or plain, depending on your preference.

You can even rope in your family in to help you with decorating. Putting up the Christmas tree is always a fun thing to do together.

As long as you have the essential decorations, you are ready to make new memories and host your first Christmas with your partner. Have fun and happy holidays!
